Bishop Hogan third graders had a lesson on how to read a procedural (how-to) text. The students learned that there are 4 questions to ask when reading a ‘how-to’ book. They are: When would this ‘how-to’ project be useful?, Why does the author think this is useful?, What materials will I need? (Visualize the steps), and How do I complete the task? This lesson was inspired by the Following Procedures strategy from Jennifer Serravallo’s book, The Reading Strategies. The questions the student’s answered as they read the LLI book Calling All Birds by Kate Hayes, specifically the Pine Cone Feeder Project, helped them learn how to monitor for meaning and determine importance when reading this type of non-fiction text.
