Ms. Kamps’ 7th graders at Our Lady of Guadalupe are learning how to add and subtract integers. Our Achieve Math program includes fluency activities to help students get engaged in the daily lessons. The following is the fluency activity we did before our integer lesson. The students played the game entitled, Number Line Race. I showed each team two cards which stood for a positive and negative integer. They had to solve the expression on their whiteboards with their teammates and then run to the number line to show their sum. Then they had to go to 0 and walk the number line to demonstrate how they solved the answer. This activity really helped the students to understand the relationship between positive and negative numbers. It was also a lot of fun! I love hearing laughter in math class!
