Bishop Hogan first graders have been working hard on their LU reading books. We recently read Meli on the Stairs by Margie Sigman. As they work to improve their comprehension skills, it is important for the students to write about their thinking when reading a story. We talked about the main character, Meli, and shared what she likes to do on the stairs.

The students then wrote about what Meli likes to do on the stairs. The students were shown how to use the text as a spelling check for the words they wrote on their paper. We discussed how important it is for a writer to spell correctly, so a reader can read their piece with understanding. When working on writing, we review letter formation, writing on a line, and use of capitalization and punctuation.

As the students finished their writing piece, they read it to the other students in our group to wrap up this comprehension lesson.
