Bishop Hogan 2nd graders have been working hard on their comprehension skills. We have recently been focusing on visualizing. Thinking stems for visualizing include: I’m picturing…, I can imagine…, I can feel, see, taste, touch, hear…, My mental images include.

Thinking stems give us a comprehension language to use when we discuss our thinking. For this lesson the students used their senses to more deeply understand a poem. I modeled the lesson with the poem, Toasting Marshmallows by Kristine O’Connell George.

The students then did their own thinking with the poem, Storm by Kristine O’Connell George. I asked the students to identify words & phrases with a highlighter from the poem that went with each of their senses. We ended the lesson by talking about how their visualizations helped them to understand the poem.
