Ms. Lopez’s 3rd graders at Holy Cross in Kansas City read the nonfiction book “All About Bats,” part of the All About Series.

This book tells about when bats sleep, how bats sleep, that they are not mammals, and what they eat. Students gathered information through illustrations and graphics while reading the text. To extend the lesson, I included some new vocabulary words for them. One of the words was echolocation.

Students had to write letters using 3 facts about bats. They had to include the 5 parts of letter writing in their writing. They created a rough draft, edited, and a final copy. Students wrote their final copy on “fancy” paper.
