Ms. Fairchild 3rd Grade students at Bishop Hogan School began thinking about inferring last November.  Ms. Fairchild had an empty donut box and the students used the empty box to infer what had once been inside.  The comprehension skill of inferring involves using text clues and background knowledge to make an inference.

Ms. Fairchild introduced ‘Inferring Thinking Stems’ to the students so they could practice using one of the stems when writing their inference about the empty box. ‘ Inferring Thinking Stems’ include My guess is…, Maybe…, Perhaps…, It could be that…, I predict…, This could mean…, I can infer that….  After the students used a thinking stem to write down their inference they drew a picture to go along with the box.
