The 6th Graders at Holy Cross School in KC read the book “Keeping the Light” by Susan McCloskey. It is a historical
fiction text. Students read the story about a girl and her uncle who live on an island and take care of the lighthouse.
Due to the story being historical fiction, students had to understand the setting of the story.

We discussed thedifferent clues used to determine the setting and its importance. The first part of the year, we have been discussing how to find and use text evidence. For the writing activity, students had to find clues along with text evidence to support the setting.

As a group, they wrote the two of the clues and text evidence. As an individual, each student had to write two more on their own.
