The third-grade students at Holy Name School have been working on identifying the beginning, middle, and end to a story and identifying proper nouns. In this lesson, the students used the book Bill and Pete Go Down the Nile by Tomie dePaola.

To build background knowledge and vocabulary the students started with a virtual field trip to Egypt. On their “field trip” they learned all about the pyramids and mummies. The vocabulary focused on was sphinx, mummy, and sarcophagus which students would see in the story as well as use in their writing.

Next, we read the story. After, we discussed the beginning, middle, and end of the story using a 4 square graphic organizer. The students completed it together and then illustrated their work. This was part two of a three-part lesson series using the Bill and Pete series and learning about Egypt.
