At Agape Christian Academy, 2nd grade students have been working on adding and subtracting math facts up to 20. First, students were taught how to use the number line to add and not count the number. For example, if given the number equation 4+3= , students would choose the bigger number which is 4 and count up from 4 three hops (5, 6, 7) and land the 3rd time on number 7, so 4+3=7. Second, students were taught how to use the number line to subtract.
Once they understood subtraction as a “less than” process, students were taught how to use addition to their advantage. For example, if given the number equation 9-4= , students would circle the 4 on the number line as the starting number and then count up to 9 (5, 6, 7, 8, 9) and when the get to 9, the number of jumps is the answer (5 jumps is the answer to 9-4=5 or 5 jumps).
Students have been doing great. We are limiting using the number line now and students are only using their fingers a quarter of the time now. Our next step is no fingers!
