The 2nd and 3rd graders at St. Paul have been exploring many realistic fiction books and discussing what elements could really happen. We have spent time charting those ideas with each book we read and discussing things like; what would we do in that situation, what could the character have done differently, and so on.
One of our favorite realistic fiction books (so far) is “Allie and the Everything Sandwich” where the main character is deemed the caretaker of her younger brother who is known to be a bit mischievous. Allie makes a few questionable decisions that end up backfiring in the end. The second grade student wrote about some of these.
